Special Education: IDEA

Free and Appropriate Public Education

Image of a combination whiteboard bulletin board. Title: Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). Picture of teacher helping young boy reading.

Text reads: FAPE means that the child receives specially designed special education instruction at no cost to the parent(s). I D E A requires that the child has the opportunity to make adequate progress in meeting his or her Individualized Education Program (I E P) goals.

When referring to FAPE, be aware that although IDEA requires that services be provided to your child, it does not require a guarantee of state-of-the-art services to maximize your child's potential.
