The transfer of rights at the age of majority means that your child becomes responsible for his or her educational program. In the majority of states and in the Department of Defense schools, the age of majority is 18. You and your child must be given notice at least one year before your child reaches the age of majority. This notice alerts you of the pending transfer of rights so that you can consider whether or not your child is capable of representing him- or herself.
